Whether you're a contemporary filmmaker screening valuable 16mm prints of your work, or someone wanting to confidently view priceless old 8mm home movies the way they were intended to be seen, projecting film need not be regarded as an intimidating or arduous task. In this hands-on instructional workshop, we will attempt to demystify the workings of the projector by breaking it down into its key elements; While design specifics may vary from one projector to the next, the basic mechanics of the how every film projector works has changed very little since the time of its inception over a century ago. Every part of the projector serves a function, and by learning what each part is intented to do, one can easily assess the problem and troubleshoot when something goes wrong. 

Workshop participants can expect to leave with a deeper understanding of how a projector works functionally and in concert with our brains to produce the illusion of movement from a collection of still images. We will discuss common variations among projectors (including different methods of threading, sound and speed capabilities, and different lamp types) – as well as what to look for when seeking out a projector. We will learn to project on a number of different types of 8mm, Super 8, 16mm and 35mm projectors. We will also learn to splice film and build a "show reel" from multiple prints. Finally, we will discuss common problems you may encounter while projecting, likely causes of those problems, and how to fix them so you can get on with the show.
