Join AgX for an introduction to direct animation, where participants will learn techniques for making cameraless 16mm films by painting, drawing, or scratching directly onto film.
Once you've got your film print, how best can you preserve it over the years? Whether you're shooting on film, or just working with found analog film formats, this two-hour introduction to film preservation is designed with filmmakers in mind, particularly those who are storing their own prints at home.
This workshop will cover both the science of how images are captured on and brought out of silver-based film emulsions, as well as practical techniques for hand-processing movie film.
This single six-hour workshop, geared toward individuals with little or no experience shooting film, will focus on 16mm production basics using Bolex H16 Reflex cameras. We will begin by discussing what makes film unique, and looking at some examples. Participants will then learn how to shoot with the Bolex; how to utilize its various functions for creative effects such as slow-motion, stop-motion, multiple exposures, and pixilation; how to use a light meter, and the various ways to control light.

The objective of the Projection Repair Workshop is to teach participants how portable 16mm projectors function on a mechanical level, giving them the knowledge and skills to troubleshoot and repair projectors beyond the workshop.

Workshop participants will shoot, process and watch the analog film created during the workshop.
We will experiment with several techniques including photogramming, bi-packing, and sync block printing using Hi-Con film and B+W negative and will hand process our footage to create our own unique films, and discuss other ways of DIY printing that can be explored using other equipment available at the AgX Film Collective!
